One-off in Europe research hub for geoscience, life sciences and aquatic systems in Murighiol
Under a contract for the priority project International Center for Advanced Studies for River-Sea Systems DANUBIUS-RO that was signed on Wednesday at the government headquarters by Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Transformation Bogdan Ivan, Minister of European Investments and Projects Adrian Caciu, and general director of the National Research and Development Institute for Biological Sciences Mihaela Marinela Paun, Romania will have a one-off in Europe research center in Murighiol - Tulcea County.
The scope of the research hub will be geosciences, life sciences and aquatic systems.
"The Danube is an important vector of Europe, it is the second longest European river. It crosses, if I'm not mistaken, 10 countries, four capital cities, and flows the longest stretch here, in Romania. (...) I'm very happy that such a project primarily aims at elements related to the research platform capable of providing us with the conditions and information, but also with the necessary structure for us to even better showcase this habitat. Another very important aspect is the international dimension. As I said a little earlier, the Danube crosses an important number of states and it is highly beneficial that through this project you are able to bring together the innovative minds of researchers from all the states bordering the Danube. No less important is the fact that the development hub and the labs are located in the Danube Delta," said Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacsu.
Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Transformation Bogdan Ivan said that the project has an implementation period of 60 months and is worth over 128 million euros.
"The Danubius International Center for Advanced Studies for River-Sea Systems is financed under the Smart Growth, Digitization and Financial Instruments Program - POCIDIF with EUR 128.2 million, over its 60-month implementation time. (...) What we are actually doing through this project is extremely important. We are building in Murighiol a hub that is unique in all of Europe - 17 scientific laboratories for geosciences, life sciences and aquatic systems research, eight field stations and 16 observation points that will use the latest technologies in processing big data, and will use artificial intelligence in order to have an exhaustive analysis of everything the captured data mean," Bogdan Ivan said.
He mentioned that the project will have an impact on the economic development of the Danube Delta ecosystem, but also in the field of technological transfer, "creating added value and showing that middle-level Romanian researchers can have a future here."
Minister of European Investments and Projects Adrian Caciu expressed his hope that the final results will be disseminated to the understanding of the general public and that the attractiveness of the Danube Delta will thus increase.
In her turn, general director of the National Research and Development Institute for Biological Sciences Mihaela Marinela Paun said that this is a pan-European infrastructure coordinated by Romania and that more than 300 Romanian and foreign researchers will work at the hub.
"Danubius-Ro is an infrastructure of crucial importance for everything related to addressing the challenges of the river-sea transition environment," declared Paun.
Alongside the National Institute for Research and Development of Biological Sciences, the consortium also includes the Geo-Ecomar Marine Geology and Geoecology Institute, the Danube Delta Institute, and the Geodynamics Institute.
