Film historian Kristin Thompson to receive Doctor Honoris Causa title of Theatre and Film University
Kristin Thompson, American film historian, will receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, on Thursday, from the I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film (UNATC) in Bucharest.
According to a UNATC press release, Kristin Thompson will be in Bucharest, for the first time, between October 24 and 27, during which time she will also participate in a series of public events.
"Kristin Thompson's visit is closely related to an exceptional publishing event: the monumental work written together with David Bordwell and Jeff Smith, "Film History: An Introduction," translated for the first time into Romanian and published in 2024, in two volumes, at the UNATC Press and Vellant publishing houses. At the UNATC, Kristin Thompson will also have meetings with students and teachers, and at Carturesti&Friends Bookstore she will meet her readers from Romania," the release states.
Also, during the Festival Les Films de Cannes in Bucarest, Kristin Thompson will present two classic films in the "Carte Blanche" section and she will hold a masterclass.
Throughout her career, Kristin Thompson has dedicated extensive studies both to film directors from the classic period of world cinema, such as Ernst Lubitsch, as well as to some contemporaries, such as Christopher Nolan or Peter Jackson. She wrote or co-wrote with her husband, the late historian David Bordwell, several books about American cinema, signing together two of the most popular and influential syntheses of world film in recent decades: "Film History: An Introduction" and "Film Art: An Introduction," the press release also states.
The ceremony of conferring the title of Doctor Honoris Causa will take place on October 24, at the UNATC.
She will also be present, on October 25, at the Auditorium Hall of the National Art Museum of Romania, where she will present the film "The Long Day Closes" (1992, Terence Davies) in the 'Carte Blanche' section of the festival Les Films de Cannes a Bucarest, the 2024 edition, and on October 26, at the Cinema Elvire Popesco, the film "Lady Windermere's Fan."
Also on October 26, at the Cinema hall of UNATC, Kristin Thompson will hold a masterclass, moderated by Andrei Rus and Andrei Gorzo, and on Sunday she will meet readers from Romania at Carturesti&Friends. AGERPRES (RO - author: Petronius Craiu, editor: Florin Marin, EN - author: Cristina Zaharia)
