Exhibition of handicrafts from northern Japan's Tohoku region opens in Iasi in presence of ambassador Katae

Japanese ambassador to Romania, Katae Takashi, opened on Thursday the exhibition "Beautiful Handicrafts of Tohoku, Japan", organized by the Japanese Embassy, Japan Foundation and the 'Moldova' National Museum Complex at Iasi City's Museum of Ethnography housed by the Palace of Culture.

Iasi mayor Mihai Chirica, Rector of the 'George Enescu' University of Arts Aurelian Balaita, and the manager of the 'Moldova' National Museum Complex Andrei Apreotesei were also present at the event.

Ambassador Katae declared for AGERPRES that this is the exhibition's second stay in Romania, after previously going on display in Bucharest.

It is a traveling exhibition that brings into the spotlight crafts from the Japanese region of Tohoku, some extremely refined and authentic crafts that we would like everyone to get acquainted with. Tohoku is a region that we would call rural. I think that you can see works similar to those showcased here in the rural regions of Romania. I mean the wooden sculptures and other such items, said the ambassador of Japan to Romania.

According to the organizers, the exhibition has traveled to many countries around the world, being welcomed in museums and galleries from Latvia, Lithuania, the United States, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Malaysia, Sri Lanka.

It features 70 objects of various genres - ceramics, lacquerware, textiles, metalwork, wood and bamboo, and can be visited until December 8 at the Ethnographic Museum of Moldova in the Palace of Culture in Iasi.

"The exhibition 'Beautiful Handicrafts of Tohoku, Japan' aims to bring to the public's attention the Tohoku region, one of the most beautiful and rich ethnographic areas of the Japanese archipelago, made up of the prefectures of Aomori, Akita, Yamagata, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima. This region was hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami that struck eastern Japan in 2011, with Tohoku's local culture and handicrafts suffering greatly. Despite this, the residents in the disaster-hit areas made tremendous efforts to save their valuable cultural heritage and rebuild the region," said Victor Munteanu, head of department at the Ethnographic Museum of Moldova.

Apart from traditional items crafted by anonymous artisans, the exhibition also includes works by artists who have found a rich source of inspiration in the folk art of Tohoku. Such influences can be found in the works of some Japanese artists who were active in the first and the second half of the last century.
