Romanian Parliament joins twinning project to consolidate Moldova in EU accession process

Image

The Romanian Parliament was awarded on Wednesday a twinning project for strengthening the capacities of the Parliament of Moldova for EU approximation process, as a junior partner, in a consortium consisting of Greece as senior partner, Italy, Hungary and Austria, as well as experts from the Dutch Parliament.

The specific objective of twinning is to ensure an efficient, transparent and participatory legislative process, in the context of the approximation to the EU acquis, as well as to strengthen the supervision by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in the form of greater accountability for the government's decisions.

"This is the first time that the Romanian Senate wins a twinning project. The involvement and professionalism of the teams of the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament, together with counterparts from the other partner states, ensured the award of this project to our institution. We are honoured that the expertise of the specialists from the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies will contribute to the development of the activities of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova," Izabela Chencian, deputy secretary general of the Romanian Senate and junior leader in the project is quoted as saying in a press statement released by the Chamber of Deputies.

She added that "Romania's participation in this project represents another opportunity for the exchange of good practices between the Romanian Parliament and the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and will also ensure strengthening cooperation at the level of all the states involved."

"We are honoured by the opportunity to participate, as a junior partner, in the twinning project aimed at strengthening the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and its role in the process of accession to the European Union. For the Chamber of Deputies too, winning the project is a premiere. We thank all our partners, as well as congratulations for the teamwork that ensured this success. We already have an established collaboration with our colleagues in the Parliament in Chisinau, which we want to develop further. Certainly, the professionalism and involvement of the specialists from the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate will have a major contribution to achieving the objectives of this project. We are pleased to support from this perspective the very special relationship with the Republic of Moldova, as well as the possibility of strengthening cooperation with partner states," Ioana Bran-Voinea, deputy secretary general of the Chamber of Deputies and junior leader in the project, is quoted as saying in the same statement.

The project will unfold over two years and will be materialised in three components, designed to provide the necessary support to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, namely: evaluation and strengthening of the capacities of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova to analyse, develop and amend legislation in the context of approximation to the EU; strengthening Parliament's institutional capacities to exercise more effective control over the government, as well as optimising Parliament's internal procedures to effectively cope with the increased volume of legislative activity and to ensure transparency.
