Romanian investor is aged under 40 years and saves through ETFs (study)
The Romanian investor is under 40 years old and saves through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and investment plans, according to a study conducted by XTB Romania for October 31, World Savings Day.
"The most used tools through which investors plan their savings are ETFs and investment plans, which reflects their growing interest in diversifying their portfolios. The approach suggests that Romanian investors in XTB's portfolio see investments in international stock exchanges as a solid savings alternative, which can contribute to building a sustainable portfolio," reads a press release issued on Wednesday by XTB Romania.
In the first three quarters of 2024, the percentage of active clients investing in ETFs increased slightly, from 53% in Q1 to 54% in Q3, reflecting a growing interest in these financial instruments.
On the other hand, the preference for investment plans remains constant, with a stable percentage of 17% - 18%. In other words, data once again confirm the preferences of Romanian investors for ETFs, which offer them a number of important advantages, such as a high degree of diversification through exposure to several economic sectors and a relatively low risk.
Another notable aspect is the high percentage of open trades for ETFs and investment plans, a testament to the orientation of Romanian clients towards long-term investment strategies. Data from the last few months (Q3 2024) shows that 83% of ETF trades and 79% of investment plan trades remain active, up from Q2 and Q1, reflecting a longer-term, more prudent and well-documented approach of XTB users.
A breakdown by stock symbols accessed in a higher proportion by Romanian investors shows that iShares Core MSCI EMU UCITS ETF (EUNL.DE) and iShares Core S&P 500 UCITS ETF (SXR8.DE) consistently occupy the top positions in users' preferences for both ETFs and investment plans.
In Q3 2024, the symbol Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF (VWCE.DE) also appeared in the top ranking, reflecting a high appetite of investors for diversified options.
"We see that investments in ETFs and investment plans are gaining popularity among Romanians, a trend that suggests an increasingly careful and conscious approach to savings," according to Irina Cristescu, general manager at XTB Romania.
The trend of users migrating to mobile platforms continues to be evident. For example, an official statistic among XTB customers for Q3 shows that 70% of all ETF trades were made through the XTB mobile application, as against 66% in Q1 2024.
This sustained growth highlights the speed at which investors are adapting to digital solutions, but also the need for flexibility in portfolio management.
In contrast, the desktop version of the xStation 5 platform has seen a slight reduction in usage, reinforcing the growing preference for mobile investments.
On average, Romanian investors who use ETFs are between 38 and 39 years old, and the average age of those who invest through investment plans is 37. This minor age difference reflects an important feature of the investment plans, namely the availability exclusively through the XTB mobile application, as the desktop version of the application allows only the monitoring of the performance of the investment plans. That means that younger users are familiar with the technology and are also likely to use investment plans.
World Savings Day is celebrated annually on October 31 to encourage responsible management of resources and to increase the level of financial education globally.
